History of the Lebeck Inn (aka Chaff Cutters)
According to Fanny WILLIAMSON, the Lebeck Inn took its name from a Captain Lebeck, a French Army Officer imprisoned in the Bristol "French" prison during the Napoleonic Wars. On his release to remained in Bristol and opened the Inn. (Source: M S GADD manuscript notes)
The 'Lebeck Tavern' was available to let in June 1848 described as 'set in Stapleton Road, with bowling green, skittle alley, brewery, stables etc attached.' It was stated that there was no goodwill, the rent was low and the lease was coming in as moderate. 'To persons entering into the Public business this presents an opportunity rarely to be met with'. The tenant of the time was leaving in consequence of ill health.
In November 1899 the Lebeck Inn was bought by Bristol United Breweries.
