Preface
In language of the day
The names and surnames of all the able and sufficient men on body fitt for his Majesty's service in the warrs within the City of Gloucester and the Inshire of the same, wherein are contayned by theCity of Gloucester and the Hundreds of Dudstone and Barton Regis, with their ages, parsonable statures and Armours, viewed by the Right Honourable Henry LordBarkley Lord Leutenant of the said City and County thereof by direction from his Majesty in the month of September 1698. Wherein observe viz. That
The figure 1 sheweth the age of the man be about 20
The figure 2 sheweth the age of the man to be about 40
The figure 3 sheweth the age of the man be between 50 and threescore
The letter P sheweth the man to be of the tallest stature fit to make a pikeman
The letter M sheweth the man to be of middle stature fit to make a musetyer
The letters ca sheweth the men to be of lower stature fit to serve with a Calyver
The letters PY sheweth the man to be of the meanest stature either fit for a pyoner or of little other use
The letters TR showeth that at the taking of this view he was then a trained soldier
The letters SUB sheweth that the said man was then a subsidy man
Tormarton and Littleton: Whereof the Earle of Shroesbury is Lord
