| Granted administration of the will of his uncle, Bishop Mews. |
- Peter MEWS, the nephew, is here described as Doctor at Law, and as the son of the Bishop's brother, nearest blood-relative.
The implication is that the Bishop did not leave a will, but it was later claimed, with some justification it seems, that nephew Peter was not the Bishop's heir at law. The law of inheritance dictated that the Bishop's heir would be descended from his eldest brother.
After Sir Peter's death, his widow was challenged by one Thomas Mews, a descendant of the Bishop's eldest brother, but it was held that the Bishop's only inheritance was a collection of debts.
