  Notes	He was crowned King of the Mercians and West Saxons at Kingston-upon-Thames in 924. He conquered portions of Cornwall, Wales and Northumbria. In 937 a league of Welsh, Scots and Danes was formed against him but he completely routed his enemies at Brunanburgh. His fame spread to the continent; one of his step- sisters married Otto the Great, afterwards Emperor; another married Hugh, Duke of the French.
