- In the name of God, Amen, I Jarvis Clerke of Hinton Admiral in the parish of Christchurch Twineham in the County of Southampton Esquire, being of infirm health of body but of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding and considering the uncertainty of this transitory life am willing to make this my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say;
First I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my body to the earth to be interred by my executor herein after named and as for such worldly goods as God hath blessed me with I give and dispose thereof as followeth;
First my Will is that all by debts and funeral charges shall be paid and discharged;
And I give devise and bequeath to my brother Benjamin Clerke all that my house in Aldersgate Street in the City of London now in the possession of James Phillips for and during his natural life and after his decease I give the same to my brother Joseph Clerke and his heirs for ever;
And I give, devise and bequeath to my sister Lidia Hicks all that my house in Aldersgate Street aforesaid now in the possession of Sarah Tyler for and during her natural life and after her decease I give the same to my brother Joseph Clerke and his heirs for ever;
And I give, devise and bequeath to my Aunt Mews twenty five pounds which I desire her to accept to buy her mourning;
And I give, devise and bequeath to my sister Agnes Greenhill a guinea for a ring;
And I give, devise and bequeath to Mrs. Jane Lyde fifty pounds;
And I give, devise and bequeath to my god daughter Dorothy Markmath twenty five pounds;
And I give, devise and bequeath to Elizabeth Copedock, widow, twenty pounds;
And I give, devise and bequeath to my servant John Barnes fifty pounds and a suit of mourning and all my wearing apparel both linen and woollen, hats, wigs and so forth;
And I give, devise and bequeath to the poor of the parish of Christchurch twenty pounds;
All the rest and residue of my houses, lands, moneys, jewels, rings, goods and chattels whatsoever and wheresoever not before given, I give, devise and bequeath to my brother Joseph Clerke and his heirs for ever;
And I do hereby make my said brother Joseph Clerke full and sole executor of this my last Will and Testament, and I do hereby revoke disannul and make void all former Wills and Testaments heretofore by me made, and I do make and ordain this only to be my last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth day of January in the year of our Lord 1748/9 [Jarvis Clerke] Signed sealed published and declared by the said Testator Jarvis Clerke to be his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed our names as witnesses hereto in the presence of the Testator and in the presence of each other, George Baxter, Henry Richman, James Stevens.
This Will was proved at London the twenty sixth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and forty nine before the Right Worshipful John Bettesworth Doctor of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, lawfully constituted by the oath of Joseph Clerke the brother and sole Executor to whom administration was granted of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits of the deceased, having been first sworn duly to administer.
