- In the name of God Almighty, I Sarah Greenhill wife of the Reverend Cleeve Greenhill of Abbotts Langley in the County of Hertford, clerk, considering the uncertainty of this life and being at this time by God's blessing of perfect mind, memory and understanding do make this my last Will and Testament;
First and principally I commend my soul into the hands of God my Creator whose mercy I most humbly implore on its behalf through the merits of my blessed saviour and redeemer Jesus Christ. I direct my funeral to be in such private manner as my Executor hereinafter named shall think proper;
And as to my worldly estate, whereas my now husband Cleeve Greenhill some short time before our marriage to wit on the fifth day of November one thousand seven hundred and eighteen became bound unto Allen Allenson of Aldenham in the said County of Hertford, clerk, in the penal sum of two thousand pounds with condition that if he my said husband should well and truly pay or cause to be paid (after our said marriage should take effect and my said husband should have received my whole marriage portion which was five thousand pounds) unto the said Allen Allenson his Executors, Administrators or Assigns the sum of one thousand pounds of lawful money of Great Britain at such time and for the use of such person or persons as I the said Sarah Greenhill (then Sarah Norton) should at any time by writing under my hand and seal duly executied (notwithstanding my coverture) in the presence of two or more credible witnesses direct or appoint, then the said Bond to be void, my mind and Will therefore is and I do give and bequeath unto my most dearly beloved husband the said Cleeve Greenhill the said sum of one thousand pounds so reserved for my disposal in and by the said Bond of the fifth of November 1718, and I think I should be wanting in duty and gratitude to my said dear husband, whose care and indulgence to me has been so great, should I dispose of the said £1,000 so reserved to me as aforesaid in any other manner than for his benefit and I make my said dear husband Cleeve Greenhill sole executor of this my last Will and Testament;
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirty first day of August 1734 [Sarah Greenhill] Signed, sealed, published and declared by the Testatrix as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who subscribed our names in the presence of the said Testatrix and of each other the day and year abover written, U. Shudall, James Truchy.
This Will was proved at London on the third day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and thirty five before the Worshipful Stephen Cottrell Doctor of Laws Surrogate of the Right Worshipful John Bettesworth Doctor of Laws Master Keeper of Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, lawfully constituted by the oath of Cleeve Greenhill the husband and Executor named in the said Will to whom was granted administration of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits of the said deceased, having been first sworn duly to administer the same.
