Taught himself to play violin, using one that his mother had brought from the Hartshorne household. Supposedly bore resemblance to his grandfather, Frederick Hartshorne. When little his grandmother (Nora Caffery) asked him his name, and he replied "Dack Gadd". She was delighted because she wanted him to be named after hisgreat-grandfather, John Gadd. So he became known as Jack at home until he was 12, when his mother insisted that they should drop the nickname and call him Kenneth.
