  Notes	1687/8: laid up with gout at Badminton Proclaimed Charles II as King when Charles I was beheaded. One of a very few "Old English" nobles in Ireland to have been brought up as a Protestant. Consequently he was put in charge of Charles I's forces in Ireland, and tried to subdue the Irish Rebellion. His forces were pushed back to "The Pale", a few hundred square miles around Dublin.
