  Married: Dundee parish register records on this date that they were "Clandestinately [sic] married at Edinburgh, May" Scottish law did not require parental consent to marriage, and Hardwicke's Marriage Act of 1753 applied only to England and Wales, not to Scotland, so during the eighteenth century an ever increasing number of couples married outside of their parish church, and without having the banns called.
